CBSE has now made Problem solving assessment (PSA) a compulsory feature for students of classes IX and XI from January 2013, wherein students will have to sit for a 90-marks MCQ exam containing 60 questions.
This decision stems from the idea that students today need to be veered towards learning to apply the basic concepts of different subjects in real life. It aims at developing a student’s analytical skills through application based problems in Maths and Science. Specifically, it aims to help develop a student’s critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, problem solving and communication skills – cognitive skills that are extremely critical for success in life. CBSE believes that education and life skills must meet at a common point to facilitate better learning in a child and this move is a valuable step in that direction.
While there will not be separate study periods or syllabus for PSA, however students will be required to sit for a compulsory exam that will be conducted during January- February 2013. The questions will be in the area of Quantitative Reasoning, Qualitative Reasoning, & Language Conventions and will be assessing students’ ability to process, interpret and use information thereby, helping the child develop higher order thinking skills. Such skills, needless to say, will ultimately help the student also get better marks in school.
On successful completion of the test, the students of class XI will get a certificate, while for class IX students these marks will be counted towards their Formative Assessment (FA #4) scores.
In order to equip students with problem solving skills, Meritnation is launching a CBSE-PSA test pack (Click here to view FREE sample paper). PSA Test pack includes 5 Sample Papers that will help you prepare for this exam and pave your way towards success. To know more about PSA click here
